Specialist heart rhythm and ablation opinions in Oxford

Patients living outside the UK can seek an opinion about atrial fibrillation and other heart-rhythm disorders, including whether catheter ablation or another specialist treatment may be appropriate.

You may already have a cardiologist in your home country and simply want an additional electrophysiology opinion. You do not need to transfer your ongoing cardiology care to Oxford.

Reasons to seek an opinion

  • AF despite medication or cardioversion;
  • whether ablation or pulsed field ablation is appropriate;
  • AF returning after a previous ablation;
  • recurrent SVT, atrial flutter or another documented arrhythmia;
  • a procedure recommendation you would like independently reviewed; or
  • a request from your cardiologist for a cardiac-electrophysiology opinion.

Start with a review before arranging travel

Where clinically appropriate, an initial consultation may be possible remotely. Relevant information can be reviewed in advance, including ECGs, heart-rhythm monitoring and echocardiogram reports, scans, previous procedure reports, clinic letters and current medication.

The purpose is to understand the diagnosis and determine whether further assessment or treatment in Oxford is likely to be useful before unnecessary travel is arranged. Some circumstances require an in-person assessment.

If catheter ablation or another procedure is appropriate and you wish to have treatment in Oxford, the clinic can explain the treatment being proposed, the required pre-procedure assessment, the expected UK stay, follow-up arrangements, information for your cardiologist at home, and expected self-funded costs. Clinical suitability must be established before a procedure can be confirmed.

Working with your existing cardiologist

An international opinion does not have to replace your existing medical care. A focused electrophysiology opinion can be provided while your own cardiologist continues to manage wider cardiovascular health. Reports and recommendations can be shared with treating doctors, and some investigations or follow-up may be possible locally.

Medical records

Providing records before your consultation can make the assessment more useful. Helpful information includes 12-lead and symptom ECGs, Holter or other monitoring, wearable recordings where relevant, echocardiogram, CT or MRI reports, previous electrophysiology or ablation reports, recent cardiology correspondence, current medication, and details of previous cardioversions and anti-arrhythmic treatment.

Please use the clinic’s secure process rather than ordinary email where possible. Medical records written in English are preferable; the clinic can advise whether an English translation is required.

Practical questions

Which medical-record formats are helpful?

PDF clinic letters and reports are usually helpful, together with ECGs, monitor reports and imaging reports. Original image files or recordings may also be useful where available. The clinic can advise how to send records securely before an appointment.

Do I need an English translation?

Records written in English are preferable. If an important document is in another language, please ask before arranging the consultation so the clinic can advise whether an English translation is needed.

Can the first consultation be remote?

Where clinically appropriate, yes. This depends on the clinical question, available records and whether an in-person examination or assessment is needed. Remote review does not replace local urgent or emergency care.

How often would I need to attend Oxford?

This depends on the recommendation. An initial opinion may sometimes be remote, but in-person assessment, selected investigations and any catheter procedure require attendance in Oxford. Please do not make non-refundable travel arrangements until the clinical plan is clear.

Can the clinic arrange travel or accommodation?

Patients arrange their own travel and accommodation independently. The clinic can explain the expected clinical attendance and timing once the plan is clear, so that you can make appropriate arrangements.

How are quotations and payment handled?

Once the clinical plan is clear, the clinic can explain the expected self-funded costs and provide the information needed for a formal quotation. See fees and costs for general guidance.

What happens after a procedure?

You will receive follow-up advice and a clinical report. Where appropriate, recommendations and relevant correspondence can be shared with your cardiologist at home to support ongoing local care.

For doctors referring from outside the UK

Cardiologists and other physicians are welcome to refer directly for a focused electrophysiology opinion, ablation assessment or treatment. Please include the clinical question, relevant ECGs, investigations and previous treatment where possible. Ongoing cardiovascular care can remain with the referring physician.
