Introduction
Please bring or send any relevant letters, ECGs, scan reports and a current medication list. The consultation will focus on your symptoms, medical history and the question you most want answered.
Key points
- Previous test results can be helpful but are not essential.
- You are welcome to bring questions or a family member if helpful.
- Any recommended tests or treatment will be explained before arrangements are made.
Our philosophy
“The first consultation should give you clarity. We will make sure there is time to discuss your symptoms, questions and options.”
Questions to prepare for your appointment
What is the main question I want answered? What tests have I already had? What would a useful next step look like?
FAQ
Do I need a referral letter from my GP?
A referral letter may be needed in order to utilise medical insurance. If you are self-funding then a GP referral is not required, but please let us know some details about your symptoms or reason for requesting an appointment so that we can be sure that the Oxford Heart Clinic is appropriate for you.
Do you see children?
The Oxford Heart Clinic is predominantly for adult patients aged 18 years or older. In some circumstances, patients aged 16-17 can be seen - please contact us in advance to discuss this.
How long is the consultation?
A first appointment is up to 60 minutes. Follow-up appointments are up to 30 minutes, or up to 40 minutes when an echocardiogram is needed.
Will I receive a letter after the consultation?
I will usually send an electronic letter setting out my opinion and recommendations on the same day as the consultation. Follow-up questions can usually be addressed promptly by email or, where the question needs fuller discussion or a clinical reassessment, in a follow-up consultation.
Is a chaperone available?
A chaperone will be offered where appropriate. Please let us know if you would like to discuss this in advance.
Who can help with practical arrangements?
Kayley Gaul, the Oxford Heart Clinic secretary, can help with appointments at Nuffield Health The Manor Hospital on 01865 410474 or kayley@oxfordheartclinic.com.
When will I receive a response?
We aim to respond to appointment and practical enquiries within 1–2 working days, and often much sooner.
How will I receive test results?
Test results will be forwarded when they are available. If you think a result is outstanding, please contact the clinic team and we will be happy to check on it.
What if I need to cancel or rearrange my appointment?
If you are unable to attend, please let the clinic team know as soon as possible. This helps us offer the appointment to another patient and may reduce the risk of cancellation charges being applied.
What if my symptoms worsen while I am waiting?
Please contact the clinic team if your symptoms change or worsen. Do not delay seeking urgent help: call 999 for severe or life-threatening symptoms, or NHS 111 if you are unsure how urgently you need to be assessed.
